I can travel through time? Freely?

Yes.

You probably don’t have a time machine yet. But even without that…all the MTP run escorted trips into their own timeline. This is always free for people from those timelines, and sometime free for everyone. You can go to a movie, visit some sites, go shopping, there’s usually an itinerary. All MTP have buildings in the center of town, they can help you. They are also accessible on the public network.

They also allow you to lease one of their time machines for a specific period and go by yourself.

Or you can purchase one, either from them or from one of the civilian manufacturers here.

But, to answer the question, yes, you can time travel anywhere.

Except within Haven itself, but no time machine you have access to can do that, so don’t worry.

What about the far past? Or far future?

Legally yes, practically maybe don’t. Here’s a practical list of things to think about:

  • Do I know the actual date that I want to see happened? The location?
  • Can I speak the language? Do I know the culture enough to fit in?
  • Is this an event that random people would be allowed anywhere near?
  • Do I understand that everyone is going to smell, and the food will likely make me sick?
  • Am I sure I won’t let my time machine run out of power?

Note that if you get yourself stranded by obvious poor planning, the MTPs can change you for your rescue. However, they won’t even get a rescue beacon signal more than about 250 years out from when they operate, which you should remember varies based on Timeline.

As for the future, it is exactly the same as the past, just be aware it does shift and change, so the future you expect might not be there.

What if I try to change history?

The MTPs all have various laws about time travel, but a good chunk of them are up to interpretation about the temporal agents themselves. Almost everything they do it going to be based on how they interpret what you were trying to do, and how much work you caused for them.

One thing that will constantly annoy them is deliberately trying to change history.

Not because you can easily change history, but they have to investigate and deal with that thread to make sure you have not even slightly nudged history. They find it annoying, but, on the other hand, if no one did that, most of them would be out of a job.

They especially hate when you do something appears directly aimed at them or their creation. Or the invention of time travel itself. Do not go anywhere near Nikola Tesla or anything related to him. The MTPs will happily give you a list of times and places they would rather you don’t interact with and their time machines will warn you if you select an arrival window near one.

That said, the punishment is usually them grabbing you, hauling into Haven detention for a day, you agree not to do it and you say you understand it wouldn’t work, and you get assigned some community service that Project Zero thinks needs doing.

If you are wondering why you cannot change history, see Changing History?

Why can’t I time travel on Haven?

There is one law that is strictly enforced upon plenty of death, although you do not need to worry about it because it is impossible for you to do without incredible effort.

And that is backwards time travel here within Timeline Zero, or crossing your own timeline here in any manner. Once you live a specific moment here in Timeline Zero, you can never, under any circumstances, in any manner, no matter how you get there, be in an earlier moment.

This may seem unnecessary harsh, but Timeline Zero must never have more than one thread. The entire problem with being a temporal refugee is that we cannot live in the MTPs timelines without risking erasure are by threads shifting, because we never exist in nearby threads. We are always unique. And Timeline Zero is alone in that it doesn’t have other threads, so those threads can’t erase us.

Anyone time traveling backwards here risks destroying that. If Timeline Zero ever has more than one thread, than everyone coming in, will arrive in just one of those threads, just like how it works in all the other timelines. Which means they have a 50/50 chance of being erased as threads collide and adjust.

All time machines built by a MTP detect if a traveler has been on Haven before, and will not allow travel to go to a point before that. As do all civilian time machines manufactured on Haven. Note this applies to everyone traveling, anything carried, and even the time machine itself! So if you happen to run across someone from the future or past of Haven while out in another timeline, you want to be very careful about interacting with them, don’t take anything from them, and you certainly don’t want to travel back here together. You will all be forced to whatever point is the farthest in the future. The MTP and civilian time machines give a warning if that is about to happen.

No, that cannot be fixed if you did it by accident and you skipped forward five years on Haven and your lover moved on, or whatever. We cannot make exceptions for this, this is not some rule we have, this place would cease to work for its purpose if we started allowing time travel within it.
