Jeremy had shown up in 21 HY to the considerable relief of Elias Burke, who was notably useless with networking. The network at that point was Project Zero’s vague attempt at a network from a decade prior, with the addition of a bunch of Internet and InterLink segments glued together by poorly functioning bridges and the entire thing kept falling over and crashing, and Burke didn’t understand it at all, which he would freely admit.
And it had started falling over almost constantly since Mab had essentially invented social media with ‘Zero Flux Given’. There had been a small group of volunteers that tried to maintain it, but they couldn’t keep up with the problems. It had basically fallen completely over for several days when Jeremy showed up.
Jeremy was one of those nerds that walk into a situation like that and sees a giant opportunity to rebuild something The Way That It Should Be Built.
And he proceeded to do so, joining the volunteers that maintained the system, and eventually just taking over the group by sheer force of personality and competence.
He then had a rather large disagreement with the Haven Provisional Government, but that was settled and he currently works ‘for them’, in that he, like most people who work for the Haven Provisional Government, actually works for Project Zero and gets paid by them, but his job is basically report to the Haven Provisional Government and do what they ask.
If asked, he’ll admit that his distaste for the government is the fact he’s gay and from 2023, and the Gallo administration basically murdered him. They grabbed him because some of his associates got in trouble with the law and prosecutors came across his name in their contacts and needed some people to pad out their arrest quotas. He wasn’t technically arrested, they didn’t even bother with charging him with anything, they didn’t have to at that point in time, they could just hold him for a month in a detention facility as someone connected to a criminal they wanted to charge, thanks to various Supreme Court decisions giving more and more power to the executive.
Of course, the fun thing about concentration camps, and make no mistake that these were concentration camps with nicer paint and brighter uniforms, is that the government didn’t have to kill people in them for them to die. It just lets them die, of disease or malnutrition or exposure. In Jeremy’s case, it was a lot faster than most because he had suffered internal bleeding during his ‘detention’, which had not been treated. Jeremy Michael Touze died of internal bleeding March 14th, 2023, approximately 9 hours after he was detained.
But in one thread, a woman showed up to save him before his detention. He doesn’t know why she babbling incoherently about how he was her uncle and he was going to die. Her timing, for whatever reason, was very bad, she showed up mere minutes before the authorities burst in, and they shot her dead when they showed up. At the time, he assumed she was crazy. He didn’t have a niece. He did have a younger sister, but she wasn’t even married, much less had an adult child who was basically her age! But he grabbed the ‘cell phone’ that she had been holding and ran. Later, as he hid under a bridge, he started poking at the cell phone, and realized…it was a time machine. Or, at least, something that looked a hell of a lot like one. Someone had gone to a lot of work to build this device. And he selected Haven, and took a trip.
Arrived 21HY from 2023 Legacy.
