All Outcomes, positive and negative, are categorized into three rough levels of effect: limited, standard, and great.
Everything is standard by default, and that goes unsaid. However, the GM can pick one of the other positions. They will take things into consideration such as the scope of what you're trying to do and whether it is even plausible or makes narrative sense.
You also can change the effect, with a setup action by another teammate, see 'Changing the Odds', or with a specialty in that area.
There also can be effects beyond those three on both sides:
Zero effect, which means it doesn't do what you're trying to do, at all. You might sometimes still be asked to roll for a zero effect action if you want, as it still might do something interesting.
GM: Price is about to put his plan into action. Last chance here.
Miranda: Well, I'm out of options here, can I just plea with him? Using Connect? Maybe get him to delay it?
GM: You can, but I'm going to tell you, straight up, that will have no effect on him. But...roll it if you want to.
Miranda: I'm making an impassioned plea for him to think about the lives he's ending. That's a 6.
GM: Well, that did nothing to Price, but your heartfelt plea actually does seem to have caused his henceman to look a little dubious.
Miranda: Hmm. Well then. I'll continue to plea with Price, or at least speaking like I'm talking to him, but then I'll actually be looking at the henchman.
GM: Roll me another Connect.
Extreme effect, which means it is absurdly effect, or absurdly bad, depending on the outcome it's attached to is positive or negative. Note that extreme harm is level 4, which is death.
GM: You're standing there looking at a man holding a gun on you from ten feet away, and he's about to pull the trigger. You're looking at level three harm here if he get a shot off. What are you doing?
Greg: I'm going to jump out the window and aim for the pool.
GM: ...you do remember this is the fourth floor?
Greg: Yup.
GM: Okay, this is extremely dangerous, and if you miss you will die. But it's up to you. Assault?
Greg: Alright. And that's a...3. I'm going to resist that.
GM: I would hope so! That reduces it to third level harm, you do land entirely in the pool, however, you slam into the water hard enough that you barely make it back to the surface, your head is spinning so badly. Make level three harm 'Serious concussion', Luckily, there's a lifeguard on duty and they leap in and help you out of the pool. And have called an ambulance for you. Let's hope the guys don't come down to the pool and try to finish you off, cause you are in no state to do much of anything. Roll your body resistant roll to see how much stress you took on top of all that.
